Mildew does not start on the panel face. It starts where sweat collects and air does not move: the seam channel, the back of the panel, the inside of a bag zipped shut after training.

Two things decide whether it takes hold. An antimicrobial dispersed in the PU layer stays there, while a spray applied at packing washes off at the first wipe-down. And a microfiber nonwoven releases moisture, where a foam-backed vinyl holds it against the adhesive and lets mould grow from inside out.

Pale shades show it first. Pink, ivory and pale blue spot before navy, and once a spot forms the ball is unsellable, not just worn. Colour and antimicrobial route are chosen together.

The antimicrobial stays in the coating. It is dispersed in the PU layer during coating, so cleaning the ball with a damp cloth or gym disinfectant does not strip it. A surface spray would.

A base that lets sweat out. Microfiber nonwoven wicks and releases moisture instead of holding it against the adhesive, which is where mould usually begins on a foam-backed ball.

Pale shades that survive a season. Light and rub fastness are tested per order on the shade you approve, because a pale panel that spots or fades is the first complaint a gym buyer hears.

Applications: indoor training volleyballs, futsal and handball, school and club balls, and rental balls that are handled by hundreds of players and stored damp.

 

• Coating, embossing and inspection run as one line under one lot number. Every roll is gauged at three points across the width, and shade is read against the approved swatch under D65 before winding and labelling.

• Reports travel with the shipment: REACH SVHC, RoHS, ISO 105 colourfastness to light and to rubbing, plus abrasion and adhesion on the construction you order. Antimicrobial performance is tested per order to the method you nominate, such as ISO 846 or ASTM G21. Quality system ISO 9001 certified.

• 300 linear metres per colour, 10-15 days after colour approval, 1,000,000 metres monthly. Rolls are wound to your run length, wrapped in PE with desiccant and labelled by lot. 1. Does it stop mildew, or just cover the smell? The antimicrobial sits in the PU layer and acts where spores land. Odour from an already contaminated ball will not disappear: this is prevention at the material stage, not a cure for a wet bag.

2. Will pale pink show spots before a dark shade does? Yes. A pale panel shows a spot within days; navy hides it for weeks. If your range is pale, specify the antimicrobial route and ship with desiccant, and test a full ball rather than a loose swatch.

3. Does the white backing soak up sweat? The backing is the path moisture takes, which is why we use microfiber nonwoven rather than foam. Tell us if your construction adds a foam layer, because that layer, not the face, becomes the reservoir.

4. Can gyms clean it with alcohol or disinfectant? Alcohol and quaternary disinfectants are used on indoor balls constantly. Resistance is tested per order; solvent-based cleaners are the ones to avoid.

5. Which thickness for futsal and for training volleyball? 1.4 mm for futsal, which takes floor contact and keeps its shape. 1.2 mm for a light training volleyball where the panel should stay thin over the bladder.
