How is artificial leather made?

Types of artificial leather

There are two main types of artificial leather: polyurethane leather (PU artificial leather fabric) and polyvinyl chloride artificial leather (PVC artificial leather fabric).

PU imitation leather fabric

PU artificial leather is made by adding 100% polyurethane finish to the fabric base. Base materials can range from nylon, polyester, rayon to cotton. To obtain a replica of genuine leather, a roller is used to apply the artificial grain pattern. The grain pattern is usually very uniform.

PVC artificial leather fabric

PVC artificial leather is very similar to PU artificial leather. The only difference is that instead of polyurethane, PVC artificial leather is made by mixing polyvinyl chloride with plasticizers, lubricants, and stabilizers that help soften, bend, and protect the substrate it's applied to . The substrate can be cotton, nylon, polyester or rayon.

Is artificial leather durable?

Artificial leather does not last as long as genuine leather. While it may be very attractive, in the matter of time, it will start to wear out. But since it is much cheaper than genuine leather, faux leather is easy to replace when it deteriorates
