How to Identify the Type of Leather?

Feb 25, 2022

So many types of leather, how to distinguish? Today I will teach you how to distinguish.

Different types of leather have similarities in appearance and internal structure, such as horseskin and cowhide, yellow cowhide and yak skin, donkey skin and sheepskin, kangaroo skin and calfskin, etc. With the improvement of leather processing technology, the leather has been trimmed, decorated and imitated embossing, which can make it unrecognizable, some original features are covered, and then cut, divided and delicately sewn, what kind of leather does it belong to, with the naked eye almost illegible. In order to pursue profit, some manufacturers will take advantage of the similarities in the appearance of different leathers, and use different methods in production. In merchants, it is also common for leather products to be marked with "real leather" or "cow leather". Individual salespeople do not give detailed introductions to promote their products, resulting in customers making wrong choices.

Here are some common identification methods:

1. Comparison between cowhide and horsehide: the pores on the surface of cowhide are round, and extend straight into the leather. The pores are tight and uniform, and the arrangement is irregular, like a sky full of stars; while the pores of horsehide are oval, which are more oval than cowhide pores. Large, slanting into the leather in the shape of veins, the arrangement is more regular, the leather surface is soft and loose, the color is dim and bright, not as good as cowhide.

2. Comparison between yellow leather and yak leather: Yellow leather has more symmetrical pores, while yak leather has thicker and sparser pores.

3. Comparison between sheepskin and donkey skin: sheepskin has scaly pores and feels better than donkey skin. In recent years, as people's knowledge of the medicinal properties of donkey skins has grown, donkey skins are rarely used on handbags.

4. Comparison between cowhide and pigskin: the pores of cowhide are fine and dense, arranged irregularly, and the cortex is smooth and clean; while the pores of pigskin are arranged in a triangular shape, and the cortex is loose.
