What is flame retardancy? As the name suggests, it reduces the flammability of the material, slows down the spread of flame, and extinguishes itself quickly when the flame is removed.
The polyurethane on the surface of the microfiber leather is itself a flammable material. In addition, a large amount of combustible base cloth, plasticizers and other organic compounds are used in the manufacturing process of the microfiber leather, which is more flammable.
In order for these flammable materials to achieve flame retardancy, it is necessary to cut off the combustion cycle composed of combustibles, heat sources, and oxygen. This mission is left to flame retardants to complete, and the flame retardant methods are accordingly: gas phase flame retardant , Condensed phase flame retardant and endothermic effect.
For example, once the microfiber leather burns, the flame retardant decomposes and absorbs a large amount of heat during its combustion process, reduces the temperature of the combustion zone, and at the same time, whether water vapor is emitted, and the oxygen concentration is diluted, thereby reducing the possibility of continuous combustion of the microfiber.
Although flame retardants are powerful, the problem is that they also release poisonous gas while exerting flame retardancy, causing pollution. Therefore, the composition of flame retardants has become a difficult problem for scientists to tackle. At present, “green” flame retardants are the trend. For example, silicon-based flame retardant systems, which are non-halogen, low-smoke, and low-toxic flame retardants, are abundant in silicon resources, so this type of flame retardant is very developed. future. Similarly, boron-based and phosphorus-based flame retardants also have their own very attractive advantages.
However, things have two sides. The higher the flame retardant, the higher the cost of the flame retardant microfiber leather. So how to balance the flame retardant performance and cost will be a long-term problem.
